Some of the most prestigious golf courses in America were designed by the legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast. His creations include courses such as Baltusrol, Winged Foot and Brooklawn Country Club which is located in Fairfield, Connecticut. Now Brooklawn Country Club is making a pitch to host the 2021 .
The Solheim Cup is one of the most exciting events in professional women’s golf. The top women golfers from Europe battle the best women golfers from the good old U.S.A. in a match play format. Like the Ryder Cup, enthusiastic galleries feel a need to pump up the volume with patriotic chants as they plead for the home team as they battle for the cup.
Brooklawn Country Club is a perfect course to host this great event. It was over 80 years ago when Tillinghast created this championship golf course. Gently rolling hills lined by stone walls and majestic trees border the fairways and provide a quintessentially New England look to this challenging course.
Brooklawn has hosted major events in the past which include the 1979 U.S. Women’s Open and the 1987 U.S. Senior Men’s Open. If the Solheim Cup is awarded to Brooklawn it would be a return trip for Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie and Morgan Pressel who played in the 2003 U.S. Junior Girls tournament that was hosted by Brooklawn Country Club.
Brooklawn is always working to make a great course even better. In the last 10 years they have invested over $12 million dollars in projects such as a new irrigation system, complete bunker restoration and improvements in the 100 year old clubhouse.
In addition to being one of the top courses in the country, Brooklawn‘s location is another reason why it would be the perfect venue for this international sporting event. Fairfield is only 60 miles from New York City and we all know that its 8 million residents are fanatical sports fans. Over 20 million reside in the Fairfield area, and it is only a 2 ½ hour drive from Boston.
In addition to the millions of golf fans who are within easy driving distance, a majority of Fortune 500 firms have their main offices located in the area. These are the type of companies that sponsor major sports events.
Major brands like MasterCard, PepsiCo, and Google have shown an interest in becoming sponsors for the 2021 Solheim Cup. Organizers have reported that another 30 companies have sent letters of intent expressing their support for the bid to host the Cup.
This is an international event, and Brooklawn’s proximity to the busiest airports in the country would provide access for fans flying in from Europe to cheer on their women. Commuter trains from New York, and Amtrak, which has a station stop in Bridgeport and Stamford, makes it a very convenient stop for all fans.
Brooklawn Country Club is a superb course , with major tournament hosting experience and in one of the most accessible locations in America. Let’s make it happen. WHAT'S YOUR REACTION?
