Megan Khang, LPGA Tour rookie, wasted no time letting members of the LPGA Tour and the golfing world know she has arrived. The feisty 18 year old from Rockland, MA had a share of the lead at the halfway point of the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic last week posting opening rounds of 70, 68. Khang, Charley Hull and Haru Nomura were -8 going into the weekend. Megan was two shots clear of Paula Creamer and Hyo-Joo Kim and three shots ahead of Alison Lee, Brittany Lincicome, and Stacy Lewis. Pretty good company for a humble youngster who’s only golf coach has been and is her self taught father, Lee Khang.
Megan was just two shots off the lead as she started her final nine holes at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Sunday when her putter went cold. Hitting 16 of 18 greens, her 32 putts told the story, dropping her to a T-11th finish. It is worth noting that it was her highest putting total of the week.
Megan’s father Lee is a free-lance golf teaching professional in the Rockland area, teaching at various driving ranges and courses. The only golf instruction he had when picking up the game at age 32 was primarily from Golf Digest and YouTube videos. Lee has never had a golf lesson.
Lee is also Megan’s caddie. He would been on her bag in the Bahamas last week but his passed away in Massachusetts, so Lee stayed behind. Actually he hadn’t planned on making the trip to the Bahamas. The family simply couldn’t afford it.
Megan is the only child of Lee and Nou Khang who is a kindergarten teacher. They’re both Hmong and came to the United States from Laos. A humble family, the Khangs have made sacrificed much for their daughter. Megan knows this and is proud of and dedicated to her mother and father as well as her Hmong heritage.
Flying back to the U.S., Megan is competing in the $1.5m Coates Golf Championship in Ocala, Florida this week with her father Lee expecting to resume his caddy role and expects to ‘be on the bag’ for his talented daughter.
Best of luck Megan Khang, LPGA Tour player, Rockland Massachusetts.WHAT'S YOUR REACTION?
