I have had the pleasure to play golf courses all across the U.S.A. and Canada, and they all had something special to offer the golfer. But very few have had as much to offer as Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis, Massachusetts.
Glen Ellen is a mostly flat course making it very attractive to golfers who enjoy walking the course. The course has small greens and is very challenging from the back tees which measure out at 6,633 yards. The fairways are generous so you can let the shaft out and try to snag some birdies. The par 3holes on the front nine are short but demand an accurate short iron to have a chance at par.
The par-3 8th hole is only 130 yards from the white, but the green is shaped like a turtle’s back so hit it high and pray for a good result. I think my favorite is the 17th hole. It is a 90 degree dog leg playing at 385 yards with a water hazard about 250 yards of the tee. I went with a 3 wood and 5 iron and it worked out well for me.
The golf is enjoyable but what makes Glen Ellen unique are the amenities available on their premises. The facilities include an Olympic swimming pool and a kiddie pool. How about some tennis, volleyball, softball or bocce? There is even a miniature golf course available or you can toss a few horse shoes.
If you are planning an outing, arrangements can be made for the golfers to play the course while the rest of the gang can enjoy the facilities. Glen Ellen can also host weddings and other functions in their ballroom that holds up to 350 guests They have an executive chef on the premises where many other facilities have to depend on outside catering.
I met with the club administrators and assistant pro and then played some golf with three long-time members. They told me that they had been playing at Glen Ellen for many years and the simple reason was that it felt like home. There are a number of specials for junior and senior golfers so check the website for information. Call for a tee time and give it a try. Like me, I am sure you will think of Glen Ellen as a place where you will always feel welcome.
